Autism Speaks

I’ll be the first to admit that my blog has been postless since March, but I’m back and ready for action! I decided to write my comeback post on a cause that has become very near and dear to my heart. Autism Speaks.

I joined Alpha Xi Delta in the fall of 2010 and like most Greek organizations, we have a national philanthropy that we are required to raise money for. Little did I know just how special this particular organization would come to mean to me.

“Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Their longtime friend Bernie Marcus donated $25 million to help financially launch the organization. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and look forward to continued successes in the years ahead.” (AutismSpeaks.com)

When Alpha Xi Delta hosts fundraising events for Autism Speaks, many members of the community will attend. Often times, these community members are children with autism and their families. It’s a huge blessing to meet the people we’re helping, rather than just raising a bunch of money for a cause we know nothing about.

The Autism Speaks website is incredible! They have unlimited resources that educate, inform and help others get involved. If your life has been touched by someone with autism, I encourage you to get involved with Autism Speaks. If you just want to make a positive difference in someone’s life, I also encourage you to get involved!

Check out autismspeaks.org for more information on Autism Speaks and how you can help!
